The Assembly

THAT POOR DREAM

Written and devised collectively by The Assembly
Directed by Jess Chayes
Writer/Performers: Edward Bauer, Ben Beckley, Ray Campbell, Jocelyn Kuritsky, Moti Margolin,
Emily Louise Perkins, Terrell Wheeler
Additional Authors: Stephen Aubrey, Nick Benacerraf, Jess Chayes

A moving mosaic of what it means to be endowed with "Great Expectations", THAT POOR DREAM is set on a train traveling from New York City to Fairfield, CT, uniting worlds divided by geography, privilege, and time. Inspired by Charles Dickens’s classic novel about coming of age in a profoundly class-conscious society, The Assembly's newest creation explores how class defines and divides us, and how our shared humanity might bring us closer together.

The Assembly's most recent show, HOME/SICK, a collectively-written play about activism and revolution, was a Critics' Pick in Backstage and the New York Times, and enjoyed three sold-out runs in New York.

THAT POOR DREAM was developed at HERE Arts Center, CUNY's Prelude Festival, and New Ohio Theatre's ICE FACTORY 2013.

Sinking Ship Productions

POWERHOUSE

Created by director Jon Levin, writer Josh Luxenberg, and the Sinking Ship ensemble

Inspired by swing music, animated cartoons and futuristic machines, Powerhouse takes the audience inside the mind of Raymond Scott. He wrote fast-paced, tightly orchestrated compositions, attempting to reinvent swing in the 1940s. Wildly successful in his own time, his music would be completely forgotten were it not for its use in countless Looney Tunes cartoons of the 1940s and 1950s. Powerhouse spins a kaleidoscopic, kinetic story about creativity and the chasm between what an artist imagines and what his audience perceives.

For more info click here.

Sinking Ship Productions is a Brooklyn-based theater company dedicated to the creation of dynamic, physical, thrillingly visual theater often built using puppetry, object manipulation, music and movement. They also run Puppet Playlist, which has played to sold-out crowds since 2009, becoming one of NYC's premiere venues for original short-form puppetry.

“[Audiences are] constantly looking for the next new thing… and with this talented young company, we may have found it.”

The Dreamscape Theatre

IN FIELDS WHERE THEY LAY

A new play by Ricardo Pérez González
Developed & directed by Brad Raimondo

IN FIELDS WHERE THEY LAY tells the incredible true story of the World War I Christmas Truce — the spontaneous ceasefire between British and German soldiers that began with the singing of Christmas Carols on the night of December 24th, 1914. The play's extensive use of letters, diaries and newspaper accounts marks the 100th anniversary of the Truce by bringing this stirring and unsettling, hopeful and tragic story to life in the words of the men who lived it.

The Dreamscape Theatre tells epic stories on a human scale. Dreamscape's 2014 season is made possible in part by public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund and The Fund for Creative Communities, as well as support from the Puffin Foundation.

Performance Space 122 and New Ohio Theatre Present

SORRY ROBOT

A new play by Mike Iveson
Comissioned by PS122
2013 Ethyl Eichelberger Award Winner

Part of PS122's COIL 2015 Festival

Four performers and a standup piano create a haunting world where robots long to feel the same feelings that their embarrassing, sort of pathetic, not-very-appealing human masters feel. In a hotel that doubles as a software development facility in an ever-dystopian Florida, the machines of the future set out to prove they can do almost anything but shut up.

Beloved downtown performer, Bessie-Award-winning composer, and 2013 Ethyl Eichelberger Award winner Mike Iveson has written this farcical new play, studded with nine original compositions that will convert every human in the room into a
metallic automaton.

No robots were harmed in the making of this piece.

Sorry Robot was commissioned by PS122, the Jerome Foundation and the Ethyl Eichelberger Award with funding generously provided by the Gesso Foundation. Residency support provided by The Exchange/Orchard Project.

The NY Neo-Futurists

THE HUMAN SYMPHONY

Written and Directed by Dylan Marron
Co-Written and performed by You

The Human Symphony is an interactive theater experience from the New York Neo Futurists. Firsthand accounts of internet dating in New York City create the narrative for this unique theatrical mosaic which will be performed by a different cast of randomly selected audience members at each performance. Directed solely through instructional mp3 tracks, these "performers" are guided through a theatrical Rube Goldberg experience. The remaining audience members witness this action unfold as they listen to the online dating stories that the instructional choreography illustrates. If a story is the sum of its parts, The Human Symphony is an algebraic equation.

The New York Neo-Futurists are the prolific minds behind the ongoing weekly show, Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind, performed every Friday and Saturday at the Kraine Theater in Manhattan's East Village. Celebrating their 10 year anniversary in New York, the Neo-Futurists have a stalwart presence in the Off-Off Broadway community, and are Drama-desk nominated and New York Innovative Theatre Award winners.

"Dylan Marron’s Online Dating is staged in one of the smartest ways I’ve seen interview/verbatim theater done." — New York Theater Review

Hard Sparks

R & J & Z

Written by Melody Bates
Directed by Joan Jubett

What if Romeo and Juliet got a second chance? R & J & Z starts with Act V of Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet and keeps going, as the famous lovers navigate a world in which death isn't necessarily the end. Set against the historical backdrop of Verona's plague, this new verse play, written by Melody Bates, throws old and new characters together over the course of an apocalyptic and action-packed 24 hours. Equally inspired by Shakespeare and modern zombie films, R & J & Zpushes the boundaries of theatrical humor and horror.

HARD SPARKS champions daring performances of dangerous plays and has been nominated for eight New York Innovative Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Premiere Production for Eightythree Down and Outstanding Short Script for Chicken-Fried Ciccone. In trying times, Hard Sparks tells tales of transformation and redemption, mining our darkness for light.

Romeo and Juliet live on in more than one sense, thanks to Melody Bates’ witty and affectionate take on Shakespeare’s play. Both a wry critique of the original and a bloody feast of the undead, R & J & Z will appeal to lovers of the Bard and of popular culture alike.
